So How Are we Preparing…

While our boat is well equipped with state of the art Navigation, night vision, radar, etc. We also feel it is important to be ready for the possibility of electrical glitches/failure, and possible personal injury or health crisis. We have purchased the Waterway navigation guides that cover our entire route from Florida to Boston, and we have a hand held back up radio. In addition we have a covered life raft for up to 6 people, an EPIRB, and survival suits. For any possible health emergencies we have trauma level first aid kits and a cardiac defibrillator on board….This was prompted by both the motive to be fully prepared for any unexpected situations, and from stories we had heard from other boaters caught in unpredicted weather conditions and who experienced serious medical emergencies when traveling on the water. On the lighter side, we love to cook and so while sampling local fare at ports will certainly be part of our experience, I also plan to make some incredible meals, that will be both tasty and healthy. I will post pics and recipes at that time…certainly anyone reading this blog who has thoughts our ideas that would be of help to us, please feel free to chime in…especially with regards to navigating ICW vs open ocean as we make our way up north.

Some long distance travel. Since handover November of ‘23 we have moved from Stuart – Sarasota – St Pete – Bahamas (Abacos) – Stuart – Hilton Head – Bahamas (Eleuthera) – Miami – Stuart – Sarasota – St Pete – Marco Island – Ft Lauderdale. Next up is Bahamas (Exumas) in late May and onto Charleston for the summer. I have listed places with extended stays. There have been many other short stays enroute, including the Keys. While we have covered some miles, most legs have been relatively short.

After reading your blog I feel like we have travelled woefully unprepared! My wife did take a nasty fall on the interior stairs in the Bahamas. We are fortunate it wasn’t worse and we did have the needed first aid supplies.

These new boats are great but take some time to shake out issues. Finding the right and available resources on your journey will be key to a fun and successful adventure. Have patience and enjoy!

      2. Thank you for your detailed reply! This is our 4th boat in 7 years and definitely the last! Started with 2 different Back Coves which we loved but realized instantly in the words of Roy Scheider “We needed a bigger boat!” and during COVID could not get our hands on the next step up in that brand. A Riviera was in our marina and that is how we became interested in that brand…the most recent one was a bit of a fluke. My husband always wanted a flybridge and a new on on order suddenly became available…. Yes agreed, the good of a new boat , is well it is new, the bad is that there is usually a lot to shake off in a new boat. We are fortunate that with this delivery in Stuart and having the winter to get the bugs out, it has been really helpful having this be Riviera’s US hub. They have been great at taking care of any needs right away. Of course the Company we bought it from in Boston, Bosuns, has been wonderful as well! Looking forward to bringing her back next year and doing a Bahamas run…the wait for our Coast Guard papers precluded that this year. Thank you again and happy cruising!

    1. We have lots of favorite meals like chicken cutlets, love to grill meat or fish and make interesting side dishes…we can throw just about any vegetable in alluminum foil with EVOO and spices and they come out delicious. We have caught and cooked our meals to. Haddock, flounder, steamers, cherrystones…
